There are several items I consider to be a wardrobe staple – one of those is a sweater dress. Today’s post is all about different ways to wear a sweater dress and how to transition a sweater dress from fall into winter!
But before we get into the different ways to wear a sweater dress, let’s quickly discuss three things to keep in mind when buying a sweater dress. First, the silhouette shouldn’t be too fitted; second, the color should be solid; and third, the fabric should be cozy. While the third item isn’t as important as the first two, personally I’ve never understood the point of buying a sweater (dress) that isn’t cozy (after all if it’s chilly outside, I want to put on something with a soft and comfy fabric). This Ann Taylor sweater dress fits all three criteria; it’s not too fitted or too loose, it’s a solid color, and the cashmere fabric is dream! I also love that the turtleneck isn’t too big, which can feel claustrophobic.
Okay now let’s get onto the different ways to wear a sweater dress. Next to each option I’ve indicated in parenthesis the best season for the look and also whether it’s casual, or slightly more dressy (I’ll use the abbreviation “casual +” to refer to the latter). “
Option 1 (fall, casual): sweater dress, sneakers
Option 2 (fall, casual +): sweater dress, belt, and boots with a heel (how I’ve styled the look in this post). Aside from wearing a pair of boots with a heel, the best way to create an elevated look with a sweater dress, is to add a belt. The combination of creating definition at your waist and the gold hardware gives the dress a more elevated look. FYI: I purposefully ordered a larger size belt (I’m wearing the small) so that I would have the extra length to style the belt the way I have here. I own a belt hole puncher so I could add in a hole where I needed it, but you can also bring the belt to a shoe repair store and have them add a hole for you.
Option 3 (winter, casual): sweater dress, black leggings, and sneakers or flat over the knee boots
Option 4 (winter, casual +): sweater dress, belt, black opaque tights, and black patent heels or boots with a heel
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions about how to wear a sweater dress in the comments below!
