Tightlining is one of my favorite makeup tricks. It’s the perfect way to subtly define your eyes and create the illusion of fuller lashes.
TOOLS:
1. Laura Mercier Tightline Cake Eye Liner:
Although it is possible to tightline your eyes using an eye pencil, I use Laura Mercier Tightline Cake Eye Liner(Cake Eye Liner), which is specifically designed for tightlining. The Cake Eye Liner is available in black, blue, grey, green, gunmetal, brown, and plum.
2. Laura Mercier Flat Eye Liner Brush:
To apply the Cake Eye Liner I use the Laura Mercier Flat Eye Liner Brush, which has the perfect bristles to apply the Cake Eye Liner.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Step 1 : SLIGHTLY dampen the brush with water (Laura Mercier sells a Tightline Activator, however I have never had a problem using water).
Step 2 : Place the damp brush onto the Cake Eye Liner and swirl the brush around to form a paste. Test the consistency by swiping the brush on your hand. If the consistency is similar to a watercolor paint it’s still too thin, keep mixing.
Step 3 : Once you have achieved the correct consistency, gently lift your eyelid up and press and wiggle the brush into your upper LASHLINE, which is directly above your waterline (the dashes in the photo below indicate where your lashline is located).
Keep repeating this process along the entire upper lashline.
Tips:
- Tightline your eyes BEFORE applying eyeshadow and mascara. Use a Q-tip to clean up any smudges.
- Use brown Cake Eye Liner during daytime for a more natural look.
- Don’t get discouraged if you mess up. Keep practicing, I promise this technique eventually gets easier!
And now I turn it over to you. Have you tried tightlining? If not, are you going to try tightlining after reading this post? Let me know in the comments below!

I have dark eyes and dark lashes and I’ve tried this before. Not sure if it makes a difference on me but perhaps I should keep trying! I’ve heard time and time again that this is a makeup must so perhaps I’m missing out! LOL

Yes!! You have to do it and then send me a photo!! I think that even with dark eyes and dark lashes it would still make a difference!!! xx

I tried tightlining this morning and I was really pleased with the results–thank you for “opening my eyes” to this technique! I really like the look for daytime/going to work, as it defines the eyes but doesn’t make them look too overdone. Look forward to practicing more on the coming days. Thank you for the great post!
